Round Up: 9th October

Steve Jobs:  1955-2011
Welcome fans to your weekly round up of stories from the last 7 days. The main story of the week was the sad news of the death of Apple Co-founder and Chairman, Steve Jobs, on Wednesday. It is a testament to Apple's current popularity that people were so aware of who he was and were saddened by his death, something that may not have been true 20 years ago when Apple were struggling and Jobs was at his new company,  NeXT Computer Inc. He will always be remembered as the man who brought the iMac, iPod and iPhone to the world, when he returned to the company in 1996. He should also be remembered for the brilliant work he did helping to turn Pixar into the fantastic film producing studio it is today. Anyway enough with this depressing stuff, here at JC/DC we aim to brighten up your week, rather than darken it like all these "Real" news outlets tend to do. So on to the weird news!

For our first story we go to Holland, where we find commuters on trains without toilets are being given "bag toilets" or "Travel Johns" to use in an emergency. In the useful diagram below you can see how this hand-held toilet works. Many passengers are disgusted at the idea of having to use such a device, particularly the females.
The  Travel John "Piss Bag"

"Are you serious?" one female passenger exclaimed, "No, no way, I just can't see myself 'going' in that."

Presumably men are far more relaxed about getting their privates out in public judging by their lack of complaints. All of this does raise another point however; What was everyone peeing in before?

Just over the boarder in Germany, a fashion designer has started making clothes from an usual choice of material; milk. Far from being the latest creation for Lady Gaga, this is apparently a non chemical process which transforms the milk proteins into usable fibres which are antibacterial, anti-aging and can help regulate both blood circulation and body temperature. About 6 litres of milk will produce enough yarn to produce one dress. Brings a whole new meaning to the phrase 'liquid silk'.

One of the contestants taken to hospital told the BBC: "It was very painful and felt like I was being chainsawed in the stomach with hot sauce on the chainsaw."

Something we can all relate to there. Who hasn't been hacked at with woodcutting machinery smeared with a variety of condiments. Many condemned the event, despite it raising over £1000 for he Scottish children's charity Chas. The two contestants taken into hospital appear to have since made a full recovery, but we expect spent the remainder of the week locked in the toilet. Lucky they weren't stuck on a Dutch train.

Mr Thalers Mercedes at the entrance to the 'car park'
In Switzerland, Wednesday morning, a Mr. Peter Thaler, 42,was arrested after returning to pick up his car (pictured right). After a heavy night out he had driven his Mercedes into a lake, believing it to be an underground car park. Upon his return to the vehicle, he found the police waiting to breathalise him, a test he promptly failed due to the excesses of the previous night. It is anyone's guess as to his intended destination as, most confusingly, it would appear that there are no subterranean garages anywhere in the vicinity.

YOU MAD?
Finally, the Tyneside search rescue team was called out to what was first believed to be the flare of a troubled vessel, but later turned out to be the planet Jupiter. In response to the 'emergency' a RAF Boulmer rescue helicopter and Tynemouth RNLI were both sent to out to search for the stricken boat, but none could be found. Eventually, following further conversation with the original caller, the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade discovered the flare was actually the solar systems largest planet, which is currently very low in the sky and bright red. Although, not as red as the face of the anonymous caller.
